More- Donnie Yen returns in this follow up to the highly regarded Ip Man which I reviewed here. The film also stars Sammo Hung, who also did the fight choreography. Apparently Sammo underwent major cardiac surgery before filming yet still managed to perform his fight scenes and his own stunts, receiving several injuries in the process. The story see's Yip Man after his arrival in Hong Kong where he is struggling to make ends meet and support his family. He opens his own Wing Chun school however receives opposition from the head of the coalition of Martial Arts clubs (Sammo Hung) and is told that in order to be accepted, he has to challenge the masters of the other clubs and…
- The most impressive thing about Ip Man was its action choreography, not because it was expertly carried out but because after a long time, martial arts in cinema didn't look like a joke that went way too over-the-top. Instead, it had a very realistic feel, something that I'd been waiting for so long. There's no denying that the film had its storytelling issues but most of those complaints were simply brushed aside by its adrenaline-fueled, high octane & wildly spectacular action. Now as for Ip Man 2, almost everyone who went in expecting the same thrilling experience that the original delivered didn't really come out feeling exactly the same. The film had an opportunity to be a worthy sequel to Ip…
- Part of my Double Feature ChallengeThis sequel to Ip Man begins with the escape of Yip Man (Donnie Yen) and his family from Foshan to Hong Kong. It takes up his story in 1950, when his wife (Lynn Hung) is pregnant with their second child and he is just starting his first martial arts school.First the Wing Chun specialist has to get pupils, then he has to win his way into the inner circle of Hong Kong masters. But the primary conflict of this story is not among rival factions but between the 'foreign devils' that control Hong Kong and the indigenous people. The focus becomes a boxing exhibition, pitting Chinese martial arts against Western-style boxing, which is…
- I'm still not comfortable with the glossy digital plasticity of the 21st century kung fu film, but this one has some nice moments in its first half, following Ip as he slowly struggles to build his school and a reputation for himself as an exile in post-Civil War Hong Kong. Sammo Hung plays his rival, a somewhat corrupted Hung Gar master with some bad apple students and a soft heart. And then the movie turns into Rocky IV.I'm not quite a huge Donnie Yen fan, yet. He's a great martial arts performer, of course, and he imbues Ip with the right amount of quiet dignity, despite his slight frame (first Sammo and then the British simply tower over him).…
- Ip Man 2 probably has the widest variety of dolly zooms I've ever seen in a film. It feels like there's one every other minute, but never does it become monotonous or redundant. The director always manages to use the dolly zoom effectively, highlighting either the emotion of the particular scene, or the setting of the scene. In a film of fun, but not inventive, visuals, the dolly zooms are an excellent way of breaking up the traditional continuity editing paradigm for visual interest.Like the previous Ip Man, this one features some heavy Chinese propaganda that's very distasteful. In this sequel, Ip Man faces off against a British boxer during the British occupation of Hong Kong. Which, I won't…
- ¨Master, you really can fight ten men at once! ¨I don’t think there is anyone as exciting as Donnie Yen when it comes to martial arts, and once again he delivers with some very impressive moves and some great choreographed fighting scenes. What Ip Man 2 lacks in storytelling, it makes up for in cool action sequences. This sequel may not live up to the original, but it still is an entertaining movie, and you can never get enough of Donnie Yen. He is just such a natural on screen and his moves are superb; this role was made for him. Yen teams up once again with brilliant director, Wilson Yip, with whom he has worked five times already,…

More- Half way through I was thinking if I've already watched this movie because the story beats is so familiar. Then it hit me, it's basically Rocky IV. Nonetheless it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of see colonizers getting their ass whooped.
- Hints of Rocky 4
- Doesn't have the legendary feel that the first one gave off. It's more of an action movie this time. And it's a pretty great action movie.
- so-so sequel.
- Nobody knows who Donnie Yen is even though he was in that one Star Wars movie everyone likes for some reason
- REVIEW:-Ip Man 2: Legend of Grandmaster (2010)
What I like about the Ip Mana fighting is that he is so calm and never showy. Just does the business with precision and skill. Just like a co ordinated dance. He doesn’t even make those Kungfu noises. He has such a peaceful, tranquil and harmonious way, but it takes a while for his students to learn it. Can see where Bruce Lee got his elegant style from. He comes from a background of Wang Kun.See how the white colonisers oppressed peoples all over the world. Never have wanted a white boy to get a hiding more than now. Come my Chinese indigenous people. Horrible gory fight and that Chinese man was too old… - Good follow up if not quite as good as the first movie. I think the translation actually made the movie more comical than it should have been.
- Sammo Hung is awesome
- Only people of former colonies especially in Asia will understand this film...I had vague visions of the aged Indian freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai, similarly succumbing to British soldier's blows ,which has been shown a thousand times in Bollywood movies. The last speech by Ip Man about need to respect each other despite differences is absolute gold. That kung fu on table scene and the style of martial choreography here was pretty intense, a little change from the incessant Jackie Chan i watch almost weekly...
